The customer had an old brick fireplace and the face of the fireplace was set actually back behind the sheetrock. So I used a special nailing device, a powder actuated nail gun to install metal lath onto the existing brick.
After installing the metal lath I floated over the wire mesh with a special tan mortar mix that was colored to match the stone. I installed chicken wire on the sheetrock to give the tan mortar something to adhere to as well.
Here you can see the building process of the stone work. I built a temporary wood brace to hold the stone up over night. These fake stones are actually made up of colored cement.
Here you can see great care was taken to stagger the stone joints. Also, it was fun placing the pieces so that similar sizes were not next to each other. It was very similar to working on a jig saw puzzle and I enjoyed the work.
